HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Ready or not, 2009 is upon us and what
better way to celebrate than to go out and enjoy a scenic
snowshoe trek in Lassen Volcanic National Park. That
is exactly what Terri and TK did to welcome the new year.
They explored the Park's new visitor's center, complete with
a fireplace and hot drinks to welcome you after some fun in
the snow. For those who are interested, Lassen Park
offers ranger-led snowshoe hikes throughout winter on
Saturdays . See their
website for more details, or call (530)-595-4480.

It's the night before Christmas and all of
Plumas County is covered in a glistening
white blanket of snow. We are bundling up and going
out to finish up the last of our
holiday shopping while snowflakes dance all around us.
The local shops are all
decorated with lights and window displays, and cheerful
merchants are there to
help you pick out that perfect last minute gift!
This is a great time to come on up and bring your skis,
sleds, snowboards and have
fun in our winter wonderland. Go outside and build the
best snowman ever!

Be sure to check the weather (530-221-5613 for a local
forecast) and road
conditions (Cal Trans 1-800-427-7623) before your come up.
Don't forget to
bring warm clothing, boots, blankets, water and snacks in
your car and drive safely.
Mowgli and Baloo, our office kitties are warm and snuggly in
their beds and are
dreaming about what Santa will bring them. They have
been very good this year!
And Kari, Suzi and Terri want to wish everyone a very Merry
Christmas, Happy
Hanukkah and a wonderful New Year!

Just
in the nick of time! Karen and Gerd shared this
photo with Kari at the Visitors Bureau. Here is the
Christmas tree they cut just before the
weekend storm started. Current snow accumulations will
likely deter all but the adventurous from traveling farther
than the nearest tree lot for their Christmas tree!
While some folks were busy gathering that
last truckload of wood or scurrying around holiday shopping,
a couple of Meadow Valley residents took a little time for
play. The recent cold temperatures have resulted in
numerous lakes in
Plumas County freezing into scenic ice skating rinks.
Pictured to the right is the western end of Snake Lake on
Sunday morning.
Snow is expected to continue falling until
Tuesday morning, and though the Caltrans snowplows are doing
a great job keeping the roads clear, it would be smart
to check
road conditions before starting your journey.
The wintry scene outside could not have been
a
more perfect setting for the Quincy Community Sing held
in the courthouse this past Sunday. The mood was
festive and fun, as the crowd sang along to such favorites
as Jingle Bells, Rudolf, the Red-nosed Reindeer,
and We wish you a Merry Christmas .... and listened
to
unique renditions of holiday favorites by the featured guest
performers. As one long-time Quincy resident put it ..."
I have never been to that event, and
now, I never want to miss one! "
Looking for a great stocking stuffer??

How about a "Clean Water Starts Here" sticker ... can
be put on cars, water bottles, kids' binders, or wherever
you want! All proceeds go towards education to promote
watershed awareness in the Upper Feather River Watershed
area. Stickers are $2 each or 3 for $5 and can be purchased
at the Plumas County Visitors Bureau, located near the
airport.
December 11, 2008
Clear your throats and prepare your voices
for the 39th Annual Community Sing at the
county courthouse in Quincy, sponsored by the local
Soroptimists. This popular event is scheduled for
Sunday, Dec 14 at 2 pm. Sing-a-longs will alternate with
featured persons/groups including David Huffman and his
rendition of "O Holy Night", Johnny Walker playing a bluesy
"Silent Night", and the Chester Community Chorus with their
upbeat, jazzy version of the "Hallelujah chorus from
Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration". More
opportunities to listen to
holiday music include the
Greenville Junior-Senior High
School winter concert in the
school cafeteria at 7 pm on Dec. 12 and the Quincy High
School Winter Wonderland Music Concert starting at 4:30 pm
on Dec. 14.

Ready-or-not, snow may be heading our
way this weekend according to the
National Weather
Service. This may make off-road access to those
prime Christmas tree cutting areas a little too challenging
for some folks... So, if you still haven't obtained a
tree, don't despair. The Boy Scouts will be having a
Christmas Tree Sale from 10 am - 3 pm on Dec. 13 and 14
at the Plumas Bank Building (next to the CHP office).
December 5, 2008
Well,
we have all recovered sufficiently from Thanksgiving
feasting and holiday travels and it's back to business as
usual... which means tree lightings, light parades, visits
with Santa, wagon rides, and more sharing with family and
friends! Tonight, from 5 - 8 pm, is the 19th
Annual Main Street Sparkle in downtown
Quincy. Light parade starts at 6 pm followed by
the tree lighting at 7 pm in front of the courthouse, and a
visit by Santa. Also, this evening, is the
Portola Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting, from 5 -
8 pm.
Saturday, Dec. 6 will be a busy day with several
events
occurring around the county ... Christmas in Crescent
Mills starting at 6 pm, the Santa Train at the
Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola at 5 pm,
the Eta Alpha Holiday Fair at the
Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds from 8:30 am - 4 pm, and
the Graeagle Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting
in downtown from 1 - 5 pm. See the Plumas County
Calendar of Events for more
details.
If you haven't obtained your Christmas tree cutting
permit yet, be sure to plan ahead. There was plenty of
tree-cutting activity in Plumas County last weekend as
evidenced by the many vehicles on the road with one or two
trees tied on top. We have heard that some of the
businesses that were selling tree permits have run out, so
it is a good idea to call ahead to make sure they are
available in the area you were planning to go. Don't worry though, there are still plenty of trees to chose
from!
Weather is predicted to be fair through the weekend, and
with barely any snow at the h
igher
elevations, many areas that are normally inaccessible at
this time of year are open for all types of activity ....
Christmas tree cutting, hiking, biking, and kayaking or
canoeing to mention a few. So, go out and enjoy the
sunny weather and a tree lighting or two!
It has been a bit nippy in the mornings lately,
decorating the landscape a frosty white ... breathtaking in
every sense of the word.

November 26, 2008
Tomorrow, friends, families and loved ones will gather
together for Thanksgiving.
The air is crisp and cold and feels just right for Turkey
Day. Bundle up and go
outside for a game of touch football or just enjoy a quiet
walk after that big meal.
Be
sure to take in one of a myriad of holiday events
this weekend. The Chester Merchants will be having
their open house and tree lighting this Friday from 5-9,
the Williams House Museum in Portola has an open
house with crafts and baked goods on Friday and
Saturday from 10-3, find a perfect gift at the Holiday
Arts and Crafts Fair at the Graeagle Fire Hall on
Friday from 10-4 and Saturday 10-3, and Taylorsville
will light up the night with their annual Light Parade
starting at 6 pm on Saturday.
Whatever you choose to do, we at the visitors bureau (Kari,
Suzi, Terri and office
kitties Mowgli and Baloo) want to wish everyone a very warm
and wonderful
Thanksgiving!
November 25, 2008
Thanksgiving and holiday shopping are not the only things
folks will be doing over this long weekend in Plumas County.
It is also a popular time to go out and find a Christmas
tree ... and not from a lighted tree lot where you have a
limited selection. Selecting a Christmas tree 'Plumas
County' style means gathering the family, some warm clothes,
a picnic lunch and heading into the forest where you can
literally choose
from thousands of trees.
Christmas tree
cutting permits are only $10 each, and with gas prices
at a low (check out last year's prices in Graeagle in the
photo to the right, as compared to today's price of $2.35
per gal for regular!!) , what better time to plan a
little adventure. Even the
weather is cooperating with predictions calling for
mostly sunny skies for the weekend. Be prepared,
though, weather in the mountains can change rapidly and
unexpectedly, so make sure you bring plenty of warm clothes.
There has not been much snow yet this year so most
places, even at higher elevations, are quite accessible
right now. Not sure where to begin the search in the
1.2 million acres of forest...??? Even with the map
provided with your permit, the
decision
of where to go can be daunting so here are some suggested
locations:
Quincy area: Squirrel Creek Road; Big Creek Road
towards Bucks Lake; Silver Lake Road
Chester area: (Need to get Lassen Forest Permit)
Humboldt Road off of Highway 89 a few miles south of
Chester; Juniper Lake Road (once you get into the Lassen
National Park no cutting allowed)
Portola/Graeagle area: Up Gold Lake Road (1 mile
from Graeagle) or road towards Smith Peak near Portola.
November 24, 2008
Quincy
first-graders from Mrs. Schulz's class at Pioneer Elementary
School got in the Thanksgiving mode early, with a little
presentation of poems, readings
and
artwork last Friday. Each of them showed artwork portraying
what they were thankful for. Some kids said "the world,"
others said their pets, their siblings or their homes, and
some even said they were thankful for "their teacher." The
best part was when they put on those cool turkey hats! Wow,
we bet they could probably sell those!
Some of the events
happening over the holiday weekend include the Chester
Merchants Night Out,
Annual Light Parade, and
Christmas tree lighting on Friday, Nov 28. On Nov 29,
check out the Sierra Hospice tree lighting in Chester or the
Light Parade in Taylorsville. Looking for a special
holiday gift? Plan to stop by the
Mohawk Valley Artists' Guild Holiday faire at the
Graeagle Firehall Nov 28 & 29.
The staff at the Visitors Bureau wishes everyone a happy
Thanksgiving! And if you're still trying to decide
where to eat ....
here's a list of Plumas County restaurants serving
holiday dinners.
November 17, 2008
Some folks make the annual tradition of cutting a Christmas
tree into a major event! A group of about 75 people from
Graeagle Community Church headed up to Mills Peak in the
Lakes Basin Recreation Area on Sunday, bringing along a
lunch of chili, chips and hot dogs. Then it was off to find
the trees -- there are plenty of silvertips to choose from
in
this popular spot three miles off Gold Lake Road. There's
already some snow at this elevation, but not enough to keep
all the vehicles from making it up there. The day was sunny
and warm, the chili tasty and the group had a great time!
November 12, 2008
For those of you wanting to skip the work of cooking a
big Thanksgiving meal, there is plenty of opportunity to
enjoy dinner out on Thanksgiving Day at one of
numerous restaurants around Plumas County.

As
we wind down with the
Daily
Leaf-peeper blog, start visiting the Plumas Buzz to find
out what's happening around Plumas County. We have
experienced a beautiful and lingering fall, but are looking
forward to enjoying time with family and friends over the
holidays. The nearby mountaintops have already seen a
dusting of snow, a reminder that Ol' Man Winter is on his
way ...
Other signs that winter is approaching are all around us
... the smell of woodsmoke in the air, the fact that it gets
dark by 5:30 pm (!), the sound of snow tires on passing cars
when taking a walk downtown .
... the huge piles of fallen
leaves, now mostly brown and filling the air with an earthy,
musty aroma, especially after the recent rains.
As the Visitors Bureau staff pauses to catch their breath
after another busy "Awesome Autumn", take time to check out
the beautiful photos in the 'Leaf-peeper'
posts and think about visiting next fall if you missed us
this year!
